When it comes to ID theft, convenience items are more of a convenience for thieves

Identity theft is growing, but its growth is marked by ebbs in cycles. Certain factors influence the growth or lack of growth. One of the current factors contributing to the growth of this crime is the gadgets that we all use each and every day.

Electronic gadgets have grown in popularity – so much so that it seems everyone has more than one. Cell phones, iPods, iPads, MP3 players and GPS units. Any of these can put you and your personal information at risk. And everyone uses them…including criminals.

Criminals can use gadgets, like a cell phone with a camera, to take pictures of your credit card numbers, bank card numbers and personal identification numbers, and even to gather your personal information in order to complete stealing your identity.

A criminal can also use your gadgets against you. If a thief gets his hands on your cell phone alone, he can access enough information to rob you blind.

So what do you do? How do you protect yourself? None of us are willing to give up our gadgets, so we have to learn some new habits.

• When you are programming names, numbers and addresses into your gadget, try to keep them as generic as possible. Never use monikers like “hubby,” “sweetheart” and “best friend.” Don’t use “mom” or “dad” either.
• Owner information on a gadget is a gold mine for identity thieves. Don’t use it. If you decide to, make sure to lock the device when it’s not in use and use a PIN or combination that is difficult to guess.
• Carry your devices separately. Don’t carry everything in your purse. If it’s lost or stolen, a thief would have all he needs to steal your identity.
• Kids today have just about as many devices as their parents; in some cases, more. Educate your children about the dangers of identity theft and remind them to limit the personal information on the devices they carry.
• When you’re in public, always be aware of what’s going on around you. Shield account and PIN numbers from the view of nearby patrons. Avoid using your phone to pay bills or access accounts in public places, and never give out your account or PIN numbers over the phone in public.

Remember: a cell phone, GPS or iPad can be replaced. Your good name and good credit, can’t.
