Illegal immigrants obtain the identities of others to get jobs.

A New Hampshire woman was convicted Monday for her part in an identity theft scheme involving more than 80 stolen identity documents including birth certificates and Social Security cards of Puerto Rican residents. Sharon Aguayo-Rivera admitted that in 2005 and 2006 she was involved in the buying and selling of at least five of the document sets.

Court records show that the original documents were bought from Puerto Rican residents who were sick or addicted to drugs. Aguayo-Rivera then bought the identifying documents through middlemen in Puerto Rico, New York and Massachusetts. She then sold at least 14 of them to illegal immigrants in the US who needed them to get jobs, according to Assistant US Attorney Edward McAndrew.

Aguayo-Rivera has served about seven months in prison, and was not sentenced to any additional prison time, despite federal sentencing guideline of 15 to 18 months of prison time. Instead she has been deported back to Puerto Rico.

Larrick Stapleton cited his client’s “horrendous” life in a plea for leniency. Stapleton said Aguayo-Rivera was raped as a teenager, and had recently attempted suicide.

Jose Antonio Torres, an accomplice, has also pleaded guilty for his part in the identity theft ring, but has not yet been sentenced.
